Law Admissions 2020-21 – CLAT Entrance Exam

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national level entrance exam, which is taken into consideration by the universities for admissions to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs. It is organized by the Consortium of National Law Universities. The exams for the academic year 2020-21, will be conducted on 28th September 2020. Let’s learn in detail all about CLAT 2020.

Eligibility Criteria:

For UG & Integrated Programs:

There is no particular age limit for appearing in the exam, but the candidate should be quality the class 12th or equivalent exam from a recognized board or university. And, an aspirant must have passed these courses with at least 45% and shall be required to produce evidence of the passing of their qualifying examination at the admission.

For PG Programs:

For the PG program, an aspirant must have a minimum of 55% in the qualifying examination i.e. LL.B. The candidate must have passed/appeared in the final semester or final year of LLB on the date of his/her admission.

CLAT Process:

1- Online Application: Aspirants who want to appear in the CLAT exam must complete the registration before the last date of application, which includes registration, filling up the form, uploading documents, and fee payment.

2- Issuing Admit Card: Aspirants who have successfully completed the application process will be issued an admit card. It is mandatory for appearing in the exams. It will mention all the details about the candidate, exam centre name and location, and test schedule. Admit card will be issued to candidates on 16th September 2020.

3- Exams: Aspirants will be given 2 hours to complete the exam, and as per the 2020 exam pattern, it will be conducted online. It will be conducted on 28th September 2020.

4- Results: Results will be announced on the official website in October 2020, along with a provisional merit list for each NLU.

5- Admissions: Once the results are out, the candidate has to participate in the counselling session of NLUs.

Application Fees:

The application fees for the CLATs 2020 have to be paid through online mode i.e., by debit or credit card. The application fee is given below:

  • 4000/- for General/OBC/PWD/SAP
  • 3500/- for SC/ST

Curriculum:

For UG & Integrated Programs:

There will be a total of 150 multiple-choice questions, 1 mark each question from the following questions:

  • Quantitative Techniques
  • Legal Reasoning
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Current Affairs
  • General Knowledge
  • English Language

and 0.25 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

For PG Programs:

There will be a total of 102 questions which includes 100 multiple choice question, and 2 descriptive questions of total 150 marks from the following questions:

  • Jurisprudence
  • Constitutional Law
  • Law Subjects such as Contract, Torts, Criminal Law, International Law, IPR, etc.

Changes in CLAT 2020 exam:

  • This year CLAT exam will be a comprehension-based exam.
  • For CLAT UG, the number of questions has been reduced to 150 from 200.
  • CLAT PG will also be a comprehension-based exam there will not be any separate section descriptive questions.
  • The exam will now be conducted in online mode, where the candidate has to follow a socially distanced computer-based testing.

Exam Day Guidelines:

Exam officials have established 203 exam locations so that there are fewer candidates at each centre and this will also ensure that the candidate does not have to travel long distances for appearing in the exam. Candidates should keep in mind the following instruction on exam day:

  • Candidate should reach the exam centre at least half an hour before the exam starts.
  • The candidates with the temperature above 99.14 will be headed to the isolation lab for the exam.
  • They must without fail carry admit card with one photo ID proof and a recent passport size photograph.
  • Candidates must not carry study material, valuable items, or electronic devices such as mobile phones, calculators, smartwatches, etc. as they are banned inside the examination hall.
  • Candidates are allowed to carry masks, gloves, transparent water bottle, and hand sanitizer.

Preparation Tips:

The first and foremost thing you need to learn is time management. Plan your daily routine and follow that. Discover what are your strong points and what are your week point and then focus on that. Solve numerical problems of up to 12th standard. Concentrate on legal aptitude, be updated with current affairs, and static General Knowledge. Enhance your language and prepare well for English comprehension. And, make sure to assess your performance regularly.

Here are a few things you should consider doing while preparing for the exam:

  • Gain knowledge about the exam pattern and follow that pattern.
  • Do not leave out anything just because you find it difficult, study the entire syllabus.
  • Take mock tests, they will define your preparations and week points so that you can work on those.
  • Make notes regularly, it will be easier for you to study from those notes in the future.
  • Finally, discuss your notes and clear your doubts with your mentors or friends.
  • And don’t forget to do regular revisions

CLAT Cut Off:

Cut Off are the minimum marks scored by the candidates to secure admission in any particular university. Cut off for the CLAT exams are release after the declaration of the results. Each institute individually declares the cut-offs of their particular institute. They are generally based on:

  • Paper Difficulty Level
  • Availability of Seats
  • Average marks scored by students
  • Total test population
