An overview

Law education was started in India since the year 1987. The BCI (Bar Council of India) is the main regulatory body of Law education in India. Earlier, the profession was limited to criminal and civil litigation but since the liberalization which was carried out in the year 1991, several avenues of opportunities have opened up for law graduates, both, in private and government sector. This has led to a drastic increase in law colleges in India. Currently, more than 100 law schools come under the UGC (University Grants Commission).

Advantages of pursuing LLB course:

  • Wide range of career prospects: As per a general perception, LLB course is not just limited to the profession of a lawyer anymore. With time, it has evolved immensely and a number of professions have come into the picture. Some of these professions include corporate lawyer, criminal lawyer, legal advisor, attorney, legal journalist, judiciary, solicitor, etc.
  • High pay: According to a recent report published by Pay scale, lawyers are being paid more than engineers and MBA graduates in India. On average, a corporate lawyer earns more than 7 lacs per annum and an attorney earns more than 5 lacs per annum against a system engineer who earns around 4.9 lacs per annum.

  • Admission procedure and eligibility: The admission procedure for registering in LLB course has already begun. A general procedure consists of appearing for national level law entrance tests including CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) along with private entrance tests for specific universities. Your score in these entrance tests holds a decent amount of weight in the admission procedure. Some universities also consider the score of LSAT (Law School Admission Test) which is a standardized law test for law schools in the USA, Canada, etc. Also, an individual should have passed class 12 from any stream) in the first attempt. Further, the eligibility criteria vary as per the norms of respective institutions. There is a minimum percentage of marks required to be able to apply for this course. Moreover, there is no restriction on the stream you have pursued in class 12.
