BIOINFORMATICS (BTECH)
Overview
Bioinformatics is a dynamic field that applies computational approaches and analytical methods to capture and interpret biological data. It is an interdisciplinary field that harnesses computer science, mathematics, biochemistry, and biology for solving biological mysteries. The real-time challenges related to the health sciences, agriculture, and biotechnology fields can be addressed by a blend of Biology and Computers. The recent example of the COVID-19 vaccine and drugs have added significant value to human lives across the globe, which is an application of advanced bioinformatics. In India, there exists a significant shortage of professional bioinformaticians, and there will be a massive demand for such professionals over the next decade to unravel mysteries in the healthcare, environment, agricultural, and pharmaceutical sectors.
Educational
Objectives
The BTech Bioinformatics discipline is a comprehensive four-year undergraduate degree program designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to analyze modern biological data using cutting-edge computer science, information technology, artificial intelligence, and machine learning techniques. This interdisciplinary course delves into advanced genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data, from different biological sources for the betterment of society with the aid of computer science.
The course is ideal for students interested in computer science, biotechnology, medical devices, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cancer biology, recombinant DNA technology, etc. Students will gain proficiency in various computer programming languages, algorithms, and computational techniques pertinent to bioinformatics. After completing the course, students can pursue career options in pharmaceutical companies, with private organizations that work on developing biological databases and bioinformatics software, the education sector, or government-funded research projects. The job prospects include roles such as Data Scientist, Database Developer, Software Developer, Bioinformatics Programmer, Computational Biologist, Genetist, and Bioinformatics Analyst. In India, the average salary offered to candidates after completing the courses ranges from 5 to 12 lakhs for skilled bioinformatics.
