Geotechnical Engineering is a special branch of Civil Engineering/Applied Mechanics which focuses on the use of the soil (rocks/boulders/gravel/sand/clay) as an engineering material. The scope is not limited to its use as engineering material but it is also concerned with designing the foundation of structures, stability of the slopes, mining and tunneling. The students pursuing this course study about ideas and various research methods to prevent any damage to tilt/stability of the structure, mitigation of landslides and soil and water pollution. With the increase in infrastructure demand all over the world including India, professionals in Geotechnical Engineering are in high demand in Core companies, MNC consultancy firms, Government sectors, Mining, Road and Bridge construction and in education as well.

The course in Geotechnical Engineering is designed to fulfill the following objectives:

Employment

Every structure ultimately rests on soil! With development in various infrastructures in plains, hilly regions, deserts and marine area, there are great challenges involved in designing the foundation of the structures to safely transmit load without excessive settlement. The life of geotechnical engineer is full of such challenges. The student with Masters degree in Geotechnical engineering has following scope of employment:

  • Foundation engineer
  • Site engineer: Earthwork (embankment, excavation, level surface, road, railway, pipes {for gas, sewer, water supply, cables}, compaction and layout)
  • Material testing engineer: certify and test the engineering materials
  • Mining Engineer : to monitor and control the mining activities
  • Expert for tunneling
  • Dam safety engineer: monitor and control the seepage through earthen dams
  • Highway/Railway/Airfield engineer: Monitor and control the quality of the sub grade construction for the purpose of road/rail/runway of airplane
  • Design and execution of stable slope/vertical cut
  • Geotechnical Consultant: solving field problems related to geotechnical engineering
  • Geo-environment engineer
    • Ground water contamination study and its remedies
    • Solid waste –Engineered Landfill design
  • Expert for Ground improvement: many places the local soil is not favourable for proposed structure in such cases they need to modify/upgrade the engineering properties of soil/rock
  • Engineering Education: Lecturer/Asst. professor
  • Expert in Disaster management : Geospatial applications
  • R & D sector : CRRI, RDSO, DRDO,ISRO and other manufacturing companies related to Geotechnical engineering  products

Learning Outcomes

After completing the PG Geotechnical Engineering from Marwadi University, the students would be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental theories of soil and rock mechanics
  • Able to decide appropriate foundation for given structure and site conditions
  • Able to improve the engineering soil properties as per the requirement of the proposed structure
  • Solve complex geotechnical problems with the infusion of technology.
  • Critical thinking will be developed which help the students to analyze Geotechnical problems.
  • An environment sensitive person.

The two-year long program trains the students to become perfect in this discipline.
The students will be given opportunity to engage themselves in research and consultancy division of Marwadi University.

Criteria

BE in Civil/Environment/Mining engineering

Geotechnical Engineering
Labs (NABL Accredited)

  • Basic and Advanced Soil Mechanics Lab(including field tests like SPT, SCPT)
  • Material testing lab
  • Highway engineering lab
  • Earthquake engineering lab
  • Heavy structures lab
  • Research room
